Johannesburg has, reputably, one of the best climates in the world - with more than 260 sunny days per year on average! Winter brings dry & warm days with chilly evenings. Summer brings hot days with afternoon rainfall. Don’t forget this is the Southern hemisphere so our summer is Nov to Mar.
Summer (Nov - Mar) 32˚ - 26˚C | 16 Wet days/month
Autumn (Apr - May) 22˚ - 7˚C | 3 Wet days/month
Winter (Jun - Aug) 17˚ - 2˚C | 0 Wet days/month
Spring (Sep - Oct) 23˚ - 9˚C | 10 Wet days/month
The best way to get around Johannesburg is with a driver arranged by the hotel. The alternative (and slightly more cost-effective) would be to use the ride-hailing service, Uber, whose network is well-developed in South Africa. You will not be able to hail taxis on the street (as the city is spread out) and we would not recommend using public transport. If you hire a car please ensure you have access to online maps (Google, Apple Maps etc). All the major car hire firms will deliver to the hotel.
South Africa’s reputation does precede it but the Northern suburbs of the city, where the hotel is situated, are safe and perfectly walkable.
We do however prefer to offer some guidance about travel in South Africa, with the purpose being to ensure that you have a safe trip and don't fall victim to the common crimes that occur to tourists (not just in South Africa but all over the world)...
When in the country the two most common risks to foreign travellers in South Africa are:
Robbery of personal possessions, notably cell phones, watches, rings and cash. This generally occurs when out and about (in shopping malls etc). We recommend that you cover up valuables while walking around (you don't need Rolex watches or diamond rings here) and only use ATM’s in busy areas (credit/debit card payments are universally accepted so there is little need for cash except in a few small denominations for tipping.). If you have your cell phone out in public (especially when hailing Ubers) please be vigilant. Snatching phones while looking for your Uber is a very common crime.
Snatch & grab from vehicles is also common in South Africa. When travelling in metropolitan areas you need to exercise caution whenever a vehicle is stationary. Do not have valuables on display (wallets, phones, handbags, laptop bags etc) and be vigilant for who is around you.
Basic Security Tips;
Be vigilant when waiting for an Uber or e-hailing service
Ideally, leave jewellery and expensive watches at home
Refrain from texting or talking on your phone at traffic intersections, or in crowded areas
